Olivia Povey - teen queen!
marx-jodie-teen-queen.jpgOlivia is taking part in the national modelling/beauty pageant competition 'Teen Queen' and has got through to the semi-finals. As she tells us here, she now needs YOUR vote - by December 15th
Hello my name is Olivia Povey. I am eighteen years old and a student living in Leek, in north Staffordshire.
Could possibly make a plea for you to vote for me, as I have made it through to the semi-finals? I have until 11.30pm on the 15th December to get as many votes as possible to go through to the finals next year.
At the moment I am competing with around 30 girls between 16 and 19 and so I need all the help I can get!!
The top two girls in this round with the most votes will go through to the finals.
olivia_povey_b_150x349.jpg
The competition website is www.missteenqueenuk.com - click on the '2010 Teen Queen Heats' link on the left.
Who Am I?
I am studying Media Studies and Geography and take a keen interest in Art and Film and aspire to have a career in Media and Film Production.
I first heard about Teen Queen at the Clothes Show Live 2008 and decided to give it a go for fun. However, I did not progress with it any further that year.
But, I had recently done a charity modelling event with my local hairdressers, which was in aid of the Hopes and Dreams charity and this pushed me towards doing more events like this, not just for myself but for others.
So I thought about it again this year and decided to go for it again. After completing the application form I got an immediate response off the organisers, asking me to go to Fairlight Studios in London to take part in a photo shoot - and took the opportunity straight up!
After completing the photo shoot I felt really positive about myself and realised that in doing this competition I’m not just doing it for myself but for any other person who’s had low self esteem at one time or another.
Teen Queen competition
Another side of the competition that I found appealing is that it is in aid of The Philip Green Memorial Trust - this is a charitable organisation helping sick and disabled children all over the UK and overseas.
It supports welfare, medical and educational projects as well as helping individual children lead a normal life.
I am now through to the heats round – this is like the semi-finals, in which the public votes for the girl they want to see going to the finals in 2010.

Fake Bake sponsor UK’s only teen beauty pageant

Fake Bake sponsored Miss Teen Queen UK in hope of educating girls on the effects of sun damage on young skin.
The UK’s leading self-tan brand was one of the main sponsors of the Miss Teen Queen UK beauty pageant, the final of which took place on August 13 at the Grand Wilton Hall in Milton Keynes.
Fake Bake is currently running a “Save Your Skin” campaign to educate young girls about the dangers of sun damage. Sandra McClumpha, chief executive of Fake Bake, said “These young girls are constantly risking their health in the quest for a tan. My aim was to have them think about the consequences and re-evaluate at what cost their beauty came at.”
Lina Perrini, the national director of Miss Teen Queen UK who also wants young girls to be aware of the dangers of exposure to UV rays, said that Fake Bake was chosen because of its campaign and the fact that they, like Miss Teen Queen UK want to promote healthy skin to young girls. “By targeting girls at a young age, they will be more inclined to listen,” Perrini said.
By sponsoring the event, Fake Bake were able to offer young girls a chance to see what their product was really like as each of the 70 finalists were given free fake tans.
At the event, where Fake Bake had its own award category, “Miss Fake Bake Bikini” the brand managed to collect over 5,000 signatures for its “Save Your Skin” campaign.

A CITY schoolgirl and star of MK Dons Football Centre of Excellence shone sobrightly in a national beauty contest she won a top prize.
A-star GCSE student Katie Weller, 15, came top of the class – and competition – as Miss Teen Princess 2009.
From her first heat of the contest she beat off thousands of other entrants and had the joy of being crowned winner in the glittering final at Wilton Hall, Bletchley, last Thursday.
And for Katie and the other 65 finalists the evening was about much more than beauty on the outside; all entrants had to showcase their ambition and determination for a number of causes. All the girls had to set up their own fundraising idea for the Philip Green Memorial Trust – a charity which supports sick and disabled children.
Katie said: "When the presenters announced 'the winner of Miss Teen Princess 2009 is.......Katie Weller' I was speechless and completely overwhelmed. It is only now just sinking in that I have actually won this title.
"I am looking forward to working with Teen Queen this coming year and hopefully I can now start to progress my dream of becoming a model. I would recommend to any girl looking to fulfil their dream that this is certainly a place to start and is truly amazing!"
The finalists also had to turn their hands to political campaigning by each obtaining at least 100 signatures for a petition to ban
coin-operated sunbeds in association with artificial tan makers Fake Bake.
Katie's proud mum Patricia said: "Katie's dream is to become a model and would love to play for England Ladies football one day!
"Failing this, she would like to study fashion or beauty. Although she does say she will keep following her dream."

Wannabe model's plea for public support
Wannabe model Vickee Bessey is one step nearer achieving her ambition to tread the catwalks of the international fashion houses after being selected to take part in the heats of a beauty pageant.
Now she is hoping for support from the community in a public text vote to help her reach the finals and make her dream come true.
The 14-year-old Norton Hill pupil was spotted by scouts from the Teen Queen beauty pageant while on a school trip to the Clothes Show in December.
When they asked her if she wanted to enter their modelling competition, she didn't expect to hear any more.
Much to Vickee's surprise, a few months later she got a call from organisers saying her application was going to be put in front of the judges.
A few weeks after that and Vickee, from Church Street, Paulton, was off to London for a photo shoot and now her picture is on the website for Teen Queen where members of the public are being invited to vote for their favourite.
If Vickee gets within the top three vote then she will get to the finals of the competition aimed at teenagers in August with the prospect of a modelling contract and a chance to represent the UK at an international pageant.
Vickee said: "At the photo shoot I was told that 50 out of 80 girls photographed would appear on the website and I didn't expect anything to come from that either.
"But my picture is on the website and enduring a public vote and I would love the support of my local community to help get me through to the final."
Her mother, Teresa, said that Vickee was very excited about the prospect.
"She is over the moon because she has always wanted to be a model and she has got this far. It would be a dream come true."
But Mrs Bessey is also determined that her daughter will keep her feet firmly on the ground and not let her school work suffer.
"As a family we are really happy for her but we don't want it to distract from her school work because it is important to get qualifications."
Vickee is keen to follow a career in fashion design or as a make-up artist.
Voting in Vickee's heat started on May 1 and continues up until May 31 and her photograph can be seen in the Teen Princess section of the Teen Queen website at www.missteenqueenuk. com.

'Girl Assault' Model Disqualified
15218910.jpgA teenager disqualified from a modelling competition after attacking two girls in a street fight says she made a "terrible mistake".
Stephanie Crabtree, 17, was overjoyed to hear she had got through to the finals of a national modelling competition.
But organisers of Teen Queen UK say they have thrown her out of the contest after finding out she is serving a suspended jail sentence for the assault.
Stephanie, from Ballykelly, Co Londonderry, says she deeply regrets her actions and wants to warn other teenagers of the dangers of drink-related violence.
She said: "I made a terrible mistake and I really regret what happened that night.
"I'm trying to move on now and get on with things but I'm paying for what I did."
I had had far too much to drink, I definitely wouldn't get into that situation again. I pleaded guilty and faced up to what I did and now I have been punished for it.
The teenager said she was walking back from a party in her home town in September 2007 when she got involved in an argument with a group of girls she knew.
She was carrying a vodka glass from the party and hit one girl across the face with it, giving her a gash that needed stitches.
She also hit another girl whose blood was left on her clothes.
Stephanie was prosecuted over the incident, which happened when she was 16, and pleaded guilty to two counts of grievous bodily harm.
In July last year she was handed a six-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, and was ordered to pay ?750 compensation to each of her victims.
After her disqualification from Teen Queen UK, she said: "I could never begin to explain how much I regret my actions that night and how sorry I am for the pain and upset I caused the girls and their families.
"I had had far too much to drink, I definitely wouldn't get into that situation again. I pleaded guilty and faced up to what I did and now I have been punished for it.
"I was on a curfew all the way up to the trial so I was punished up until then as well. Now all I want to do is move on."
Teen Queen UK holds monthly heats, then a text vote decides who gets through to the finals.
Stephanie was the second Northern Irish finalist after winning the October heat, until organisers discovered her convictions.
She said: "I didn't tell Teen Queen about my past because I wanted to be given the same chances as anyone else and I didn't want to be judged on a silly mistake I made about a year-and-a-half ago.
"I'm really upset I've been disqualified but I understand why. The rules are that you can't have convictions and I have.
"I just hope now by telling my story I can help other people and stop them from making the same mistake as me."
Lina Perrini, national director of Teen Queen UK, said they were faced with no choice but to disqualify Stephanie.
She said: "Although Stephanie appears to be genuinely sorry and regretful for the incident, we have been left with no choice but to disqualify her from the 2009 finals as this is the most responsible action we can take."

Teenager reaches finals of modelling competition (and gains two inches in height) after doctors correct her curved spine

GemmaRiley.jpgAs she strikes a confident pose, it is easy to see why Gemma Riley is one of the contenders in a national modelling competition.
Yet it is only three months since the 15-year-old was in agony from a rare medical condition which contorted her spine into an S-shape.
Since then she has undergone a five-hour operation, during which surgeons clamped her spine in the right place with a titanium rod and pins.
Today, the only evidence of her ordeal is a 13-inch scar on her back which will fade in time – and the extra two inches she has gained in height following the operation.
It was during one of her first forays out after spending nearly two months recovering that talent scouts spotted Gemma at a fashion exhibition and persuaded her to enter the Miss Teen Princess UK competition for under-16s.
She was one of 20 girls who made it to the January finals and will discover next week if she is one of the three monthly winners who will go through to a live grand final in July.
‘I’ve finally got my life back on track,’ said the schoolgirl from Great Billing, Northamptonshire.
‘I had been in pain for years and it was making me depressed.
‘Since I can remember I’ve wanted to be a model but I gave up on it. Now I’ve had a massive boost of confidence and it couldn’t have come at a better time.’
Gemma had been suffering from back pain for some time when her mother began to notice her hunched way of walking.
She initially put it down to a teenage slouch but tests in February 2007 revealed the teenager had scoliosis.
The operation in October – which could have left her paralysed – was carried out at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.
Surgeons corrected the twist at the top of her spine by moving the vertebrae into position and pinning them in place.
They avoided interfering lower down as they feared she might be left unable to bend.
Gemma – who is now 5ft 8in – spent a week recovering in hospital and a further six weeks at home before going back to school part-time.
Shortly before Christmas she was at the Clothes Show Live exhibition in Birmingham when talent scouts urged her to enter the competition.
Her mother Selma, 42, who has two other daughters and a son, admitted it had taken her more than a year to realise something was wrong.
‘I’d noticed Gemma was really hunched up and walking funny but I thought she was being a typical teenager and slouching,’ she said.
‘I feel bad that I didn’t notice anything sooner but she was shy about her body and always hid it away. She was aware something wasn’t right and was embarrassed by it.'
‘I finally realised what it was after looking on the internet. Gemma had been in tears because of the pain in her back. I got her to bend forward and could see the bends in
her spine.
‘She has gone through so much with her back and she has suffered a lot of pain before and after the operation.
‘The competition has proved to her that it was all worthwhile.’

Fiona's vying with Kelly for teen title

By Daniel Igra

Bewers.jpgA SECOND Bishop's Stortford beauty is vying to become Britain's "teen queen" with victory in an online pageant.
The Observer has already called on readers to vote for Kelly Taylor, of Pages Close, Thorley Park, to take the title.
But with three spots up for grabs, let's make it two for Stortford by also voting for fellow 16-year-old Fiona Meger, of Northolt Avenue.
Brunette Fiona, who has brown eyes and stands 5ft 5in tall (1.65m), is not new to the beauty business. She began modelling last year "as a bit of a hobby" and was put on the books of Dynamite Models. Recent jobs have included a shoot on Eastbourne beach.
However, posing for photographs is not her only hobby. Unusually for a beauty pageant contestant, Fiona is also a cars and motor racing fanatic.
Indeed, she has just started a technician apprenticeship at the Audi plant in Stansted.
Fiona, like Kelly, was chosen as one of the 40 official contestants for thetitle of Teen Queen UK after being selected for a professional photo shoot at Fairlight Studios in London.
To go through to the final, which takes place next July, she has to receive enough votes from the public to finish among the top three.
The winner of the competition will receive, among a long list of prizes, a new wardrobe full of the latest fashions and accessories from sponsors including Miss Selfridge, a laptop from Skills Train, £1,000 worth of shoes from Unze and the chance to represent Britain in an international pageant.
Fiona has a long way to go to enter the top three. But as lines do not closeuntil September 30, there is still time for her to climb to the top of the leaderboard - with the help of Observer readers.
To vote for Fiona, go to www.teenqueenuk.com or simply text "Fiona Meger" to 84205. Do the same to vote for Kelly online or text "Kelly Taylor" instead.

Harlow Star - danyellaDanyella Routledge (15), of Kingsland, suffered years of torment at the hands of school bullies who used to mock her looks before taking the brave step of entering the Teen Princess UK competition.

"I couldn't believe it when I finally heard back from the organisers," she said. "I never really thought I'd get through.
"I was bullied for four years at school, with people calling me ugly, but making the shortlist for the contest has really boosted my confidence and proved those bullies wrong."

She will only make the cut if she secures enough votes from members of the public visiting the competition website, and mum Sue Senior wants the whole town to get behind her daughter.
"I'm so proud of her that she's got this far," she said. "After all that she's been through over the past four years, I'm over the moon that she's been able to prove everyone wrong.
"I now want to make sure as many people vote for her as possible. No-one could deserve to make the final more than Danyella - she's the best and most loving daughter I could ever have hoped for."
Miss Teen Queen UK was first launched two years ago as the UK's first teenage beauty pageant and has helped previous winners to take their first steps into the world of modelling.

Bullied schoolgirl reaches the finals of a beauty contest

A schoolgirl who considered killing herself after classmates called her ugly has reached the finals of a national beauty contest.
Danyella-Routledge-_995845c.jpgDanyella Routledge, 15, was bullied for four years and called nicknames such as "Mick Jagger" because of the size of her lips.
The teenager suffered panic attacks on a daily basis and considered suicide because she hated going to school so much.
But now Danyella has been chosen from 5,000 girls to be one of the 40 semi-finalists of Miss Teen Queen UK.
The year 11 pupil from Harlow, Essex, said: "I was bullied for four years at school, with people calling me ugly, but making the shortlist for the contest has really boosted my confidence and proved those bullies wrong.
"Two years ago I hit rock bottom and wanted to end my life. I hated going to school. The very thought of it gave me panic attacks. It was hell.
"When you're young it can be hard to believe in yourself instead of what others say."
Danyella, who has two disabled brothers, a six-year-old brother and a six-month-old sister said she only entered the competition for a "giggle", but being selected had given her back her self esteem.
She said: "I may not have been a stunner but looking back, I was far from ugly, nor was I overweight.
"I think I was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and it stuck. It went from a group of four or five girls calling me names to dozens catching on.
"It terrifies me to think how low and depressed I got. Now I now I've a life worth living ahead of me."
Her mother Sue Senior said she is delighted that the pageant has helped her daughter fight back.
She said: "I'm so proud of her that she's got this far. After all that she's been through over the past four years, I'm over the moon that she's been able to prove everyone wrong.
"No-one could deserve to make the final more than Danyella - she's the best and most loving daughter I could ever have hoped for."
Miss Teen Queen UK was first launched two years ago as the UK's first teenage beauty pageant and has helped previous winners to take their first steps into the world of modelling.
The competition is in partnership with the Philip Green Memorial Trust, a charity that helps sick and disabled children across the UK and overseas.

A SALE teenager hopes to follow in the footsteps of her modelling idol Kate Moss after scooping a top title.
Emma Becque, 16, beat thousands of hopefuls to win the title of Miss Teen Bikini 2008.
The St Bede’s College pupil was spotted by scouts at the Clothes Show Live earlier this year who urged her to compete for the Miss Teen Queen UK contest.
She was shortlisted for the prize out of more than 7,000 girls and, while losing out on the main title, says she was thrilled to pick up a coveted tiara and sash in the swimwear section.

She hopes the win will now pave the way for a glittering career on the catwalk.
"I’m really happy to be named Miss Teen Bikini," said Emma, of Barkers Lane.
"I want to do modelling so I will be taking part in other competitions and might even take part in this competition again.
"The person I look up to the most is probably Kate Moss, who has had a long modelling career."
Her mum Judie Becque, who went along to the finals where Emma got to meet celebrities such as ex-Big Brother contestant Ziggy Lichman, said she was incredibly proud of her daughter. She said: "Emma really enjoyed the whole process and a wonderful outcome.
"We are all proud of her as a family, including her little sister Charlotte."

teenqueen-32-03_JPG_display.jpg.display.jpgTeen Queen contestant Sophie Kinsella strutted her stuff on the catwalk but has missed out on the UK title.
Although the 16-year-old cheerleader for Crystal Palace football club did not win the modelling competition, she said that she had a fantastic time.
She said: “It was a really great experience and if another competition comes up, I’m sure I would do it again.
“All the girls were really lovely. There was no bitchiness at all.”
Sophie, from Coulsdon, had to model on the catwalk and also answer questions about herself.
She said: “I was really nervous. The question bit was the worst.
“They asked how we raised funds for the show and who our favourite celebrity was. I said mine was Angelina Jolie because she adopts orphans from poor countries.”
Sophie’s family and friends were out in force at the teen modelling competition, which took place on August 14 in Milton Keynes.
Sophie said: “They were really supportive and it was great having them there to cheer me on.”

(Teen) Queen’s visit to Luton

It was tiaras but no tantrums when not just a queen, but a princess too paid a royal visit to Luton (2nd September) and took tea at Luton Hoo, (where Queen Elizabeth II spent part of her honeymoon in 1947), as a guest of Luton’s philanthropist and millionaire businessman, Mr. Jan Telensky.
The young head-turning royals were 17-year-old Joanne Newell from Prestwick, Scotland, and 15-year-old Mia Powell, from Crawley, West Sussex, both newly crowned in the UK’s national Teen Queen beauty pageant, which recognises the talents and beauty of young girls aged 13 - 19 years old. The two girls fought of competition from 8,000 entrants to secure their crowns and spent the day in Luton shoe-shopping and enjoying the regal surroundings of Luton Hoo.
Demonstrating that they had brains as well as beauty, Joanne and Mia were in Luton to receive their winners’ prizes of state of the art laptops from Mr. Telensky, presented on behalf of his Collingdon Street firm, SkillsTrain, Europe’s leading IT home study and distance learning college.
SkillsTrain are a major sponsor of the national Miss Teen Queen beauty pageant and benefactors to several other youth charities and sponsorship schemes and were founding sponsors of the YOPEY (Young People of the Year Awards) which recognises and rewards the contribution young people make to their communities.
Lina Perrini, organiser of Miss Teen Queen UK said, “It’s great to have SkillsTrain on board as a sponsor because their business is all about self development and advancement, through training. One of the most important aspects of Teen Queen is that it recognises the talents of young girls and helps to highlight their achievements and their future potential”.
Mr. Jan Telensky said, “These girls are just delightful. They’re beautiful to look at but were both sparkling with personality and are great ambassadors for young people. I hope they have a wonderful year and thoroughly enjoy their success”.
As well as selecting some of the most beautiful under 19 year olds in the country, Teen Queen UK this year also raised over £6,000 for The Phillip Green Memorial Trust, which helps sick and disabled children in the UK and overseas.

A Wannabe model from Somerton is hoping to stand out from the crowd as she bids to be crowned Miss Teen Queen UK 2009. Gemma Brown, aged 17, of Gasson's Lane has made it through to the next round for the title and needs to finish in the top three of votes to make the final. The 5ft 10ins teenager is hoping for the town's support this month as she battles it out against 39 other hopefuls.
The former Huish Episcopi pupil beat thousands of girls to get to the semi finals of the national event and says it would be a dream come true if she was to beat the shortlist of other 16-19 year olds.
"The whole experience has been amazing. I am desperately in need of votes to go through to the final and get the chance to represent England in Miss Teen World in Barbados. I could win an introduction to a top modelling agency," she said.
"I am the only girl from Somerset so I am representing all of us and really need the support. It would be good to beat the other girls, who are mainly from London, and for a country girl to win."
Although Gemma has contemplated modelling, she never felt it was a possibility before now. The Strode College student is studying A-levels and wants to become a primary school teacher if an agency does not snap her up.

She said: "I was at the clothes show in Birmingham when a woman grabbed me and said I should enter the competition. I filled in a form and did not think much about it. I then got a phone call in June inviting me to a fashion shoot and was shortlisted from there.
"They said as I was 5ft 10ins, they were not going to turn me down. I have always been the tallest at school and friends have mentioned modelling, but now it looks more realistic. My mum is excited and my dad is too, but has said to keep my feet on the ground."
If Gemma makes it to the final she will face a celebrity panel and various challenges such as raising money for charity.
TO vote for Gemma text Gemma Brown to 84205 or call 09016561515 and then press 25 - before the end of September.
